The danger of using too many free apps…
Monday, April 12th, 2010Recently I”ve been looking for a solution for a client. They need to integrate a schedule for their fitness studio, so the visitors of their website can quickly and easily find out, what time is what class. Well, its easy, I thought. I”ll sing them up for a Google account and integrate Google calendar into their web site. Happy with this solution I started integrating the calendar, everything ok, untill I needed to do one simple thing. Change color of an event on a single calendar. After spending a couple of moments trying to do that, i decided to search the web for a hint. One of the first search results was a forum, Google forum , I couldn”t believe my eyes. Dozens of users requesting a simple feature form months, not being able to get it. It even looks like Google can”t be bothered to post a reply to all those requests. One thought comes to your mind immediately as you start thinking of it. Well what can you do, its for free, you can”t really say anything. You can”t complain, you”re not paying a penny for it. Second thought is, what free apps I”m using from Google? Gmail, Calendar ( both web and mobile ), Documents, Photos, Analytics and many many more…. And it well maybe, next time there is another problem or request with a free Google app, and no one’’s gonna care. What you gonna do? Isn”t it scary? I think it is. It’s just something to think of, that being dependent on free apps from one single company might not be the greatest idea.’
